History/Profile

DeMille Elementary School opened in 1959 in Midway City, and has continued to provide students in grades Preschool through six with a solid academic foundation. The school operates on a traditional schedule, and serves families from Midway City and Westminster. The school community consists of single family homes, apartments, mobile homes, and condominiums. A business sector is close by, there is access to public transportation and the city’s Parks and Recreation has built tennis courts and a softball field adjacent to the school.

DeMille currently has a population of approximately 475 students, including pre school and Special Ed. Our students provide a wealth of diversity in which children can learn and grow. The student body is comprised of many ethnic groups, the largest of which are Asian (41%) and Hispanic (50%). Families speak various languages including Vietnamese and Spanish. Seventy-four percent of the students at DeMille are Limited English Proficient, and eighty one percent receive free or reduced lunch. Students are provided special education services through the Resource Specialist Program and through the Speech and Language Program. We also house two SDC classes, a Pre-K SUCSSES class and a K-2 SUCSSES class. The school also provides Gifted and Talented Education students participating in classroom cluster groups by GATE certified teachers.
